Hays County Food Bank Feeds 11,998 People This Thanksgiving

SAN MARCOS, Texas, Nov. 20, 2013 - Hays County Food Bank’s annual fundraising campaign, Turkeys Tackling Hunger, strived to raise money for “turkey boxes”, which help struggling families enjoy a holiday meal.

The campaign runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30 with distributions occurring from Nov. 18 until Nov. 22. Provided there are left over turkeys, families who forgot to sign up to receive a turkey box have a second chance for pick up on Nov. 22.

Anyone living in Hays County or in the school districts is able to become a client and to receive a turkey box, without regard to their household income.

Hays County Food Bank spent $59,000 this year on turkey boxes, which are bought and assembled at H-E-B in San Marcos with the help from volunteers and H-E-B employees.

A turkey box includes a 10-12 lb. turkey, 2 cans of corn, 2 cans of green beans, 1 can of cranberry sauce, 1 large can of yams, 2 boxes of stuffing mix, 1 box of instant mashed potatoes, 1 large can of fruit cocktail, and 2 boxes of Jell-o.

With monetary donations given from various sponsors, as well as time and equipment from Little Guys Movers, who transport the 3,063 turkey boxes, Turkeys Tackling Hunger is able to feed 11,998 people this Thanksgiving.

If you would like to contribute to the Turkeys Tackling Hunger campaign, monetary donations are being accepted here.
